Young People beat the Credit Crunch this Christmas!

24 November 2009

Owen

The recent credit crunch has been described as “A sickness in the heart of Britain” causing people all over the country to adjust their lifestyle and look at different ways to save money. This month young people from the Ramsden Estate (Orpington) have been saving their money by attending Bromley’s ‘MyFuture project’ and making their own Christmas presents, instead of hitting the shops.

Owen is one of the young people from the art sessions and he comes from a family of five so has plenty of gifts to make before December rolls around.

“The MyFuture project really helps me to practice art and I enjoy having something to do in the evening. It’s a great idea and it helps if you haven’t got much money for Christmas gifts”

He has in the past worked on writing his own songs and now attends the youth club every week with the intention to make as many gifts as possible.

Owen’s father gave his views on the MyFuture art sessions, “The idea is great because Owen is artistic and this is a way for him to express his talent….. He can make presents for people he loves over the Christmas and his mum will treasure the memento.”

The project aims to get as many young people as possible to attend the youth club, the young people have been learning new skills and getting creative, at the same time they are custom designing and making wild and wonderful gifts for family and friends.

The gift making sessions started in October and have included creating their own:

Wacky Christmas cards
Funky picture frames
Mini treasure chests
Love hearts
Personalised pencil boxes
