Sport Unlimited - Sport is Fun!!

8 October 2008

Bromley’s young people are being encouraged to have fun and get active thanks to Sport England’s national ‘Sport Unlimited’ programme. Sport England hopes that through the programme young people will learn that sport is fun, does not have to be competitive and that everyone can take part.

Sport Unlimited funding has enabled local leisure trust Bromley Mytime to offer 2 new innovative programmes for Bromley’s 11-16 year olds.

The Spa at Beckenham leisure centre will host 12 new, state of the art Dance Mats. The Dance Mats link together to provide 3 different levels of challenge and just like in the arcades or at home – participants move their feet to the music and according to the direction of the arrows.

The dance mats are based in an air-conditioned dance studio and because all of the dance mats are linked together 12 participants at a time can take part either competing against themselves or each other – making it a really fun way to exercise.

Matt Cresswell, Dance Mat Instructor said “ because there are 3 levels everyone can have fun and work at their own level… all participants will personally improve and because the sessions are great fun – you really don’t know that you’re also having a really great workout’

Following feedback from young people, BoxP*H*I*T has been developed to provide a boxing style work-out. Participants kick and punch using boxing gloves and punch bags in a non-contact workout to music.

BoxP*H*I*T is delivered in studios at the Pavilion Leisure Centre in Bromley and the Spa at Beckenham.

So, as well as offering fun and innovative activities, the programmes are also great value for money and provide a safe and friendly environment for young people out of school time.

Debbie Glazzard, Connect Manager for Bromley Mytime said, “Young people have been telling us they want more to do on the weekends when they have more spare time to themselves. Increasingly they are also concerned to keep healthy and these activities are the ideal way to get in shape and have fun.”

All of the Sport Unlimited activities are running until 16 December and cost just £2 per week, thanks to funding from Pro-Active South and Sport England who want to see all young people engaged in at least 5 hours physical activity a week.
