Over 1,500 local people turned out in force on Sunday at The Bromley Mile for Sport Relief Mile in Norman Park. Milers of all ages rose to the challenge and were sponsored to do 1, 3 or 6 miles for Sport Relief which were set off by Mayor Douglas Auld, Paul Elliott (Bromley Mytime patron), and our ‘Queen’ look-a-like Amy Benedict.
The day was a massive success with friends, families and work mates joining together in friendly rivalry to rise to the challenge. Group warm-ups before the start of each race got the crowds going and whilst people were out enjoying the run the spectators had the opportunity to participate in a hula hoop competition, join in with some dances including YMCA, watch performances from MyFuture project, Line dancing from our wonderful Primetimers, a performance from local contender for Miss Universe, Kimberly Cooper and her partner Amy Orr. Sedghill Brass Band played some classics including Michael Jackson and other activities including face painting, fairground rides, assault courses, cycling and massages.
Milers were out in force to win the fancy dress competitions incluidng girls in pyjamas, lego man and superheroes Bromley. Local newspaper, the News-shopper, entered a team in the 3 mile race and Nicky Strong said, ‘We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and did really well with the run. Bearing in mind we did not do any training for this, we all ran most of the way and did the 3 miles in 39 minutes which we were all really chuffed with.’
Special congratulations go to some young runners who were only 8 and up in the winning places, along with all our older people and in particular those who participated in wheelchairs.
Age was no barrier and The Bromley Mile was bursting with energy, entertainment and enthusiasm and event co-ordinator Ashlee Corfe said, ‘I am so proud to have organised this event to enable everyone to have an enjoyable day out.’
A massive thank you to everyone who took part in The Bromley Mile and for rising to the challenge for Sport Relief. So far over £500 has been raised on the day and this could not have happened without everyone's support. A special thank you to all those companies who supported the event in one way or another and they include: Sports Relief, Bromley Mytime, Bromley Council, The Runners Shop, Rick Kenington (Race Photographer), Sainsbury's, Charity Paintball, Boots, Marks and Spencer, Bromley Volunteer Centre, Bromley College, local cycling organisations, Sports Massage team and Botton’s Family Funfair
