The London Youth Games, started in 1977, is now the largest youth games event in Europe, with over 23,000 young people taking part from the whole of London’s 33 boroughs. The finals weekend, at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, is usually held over the 2nd weekend in July, with a variety of preliminary events taking place throughout June.
LYG – Mini Games
The mini games are for primary aged children, with eight different sports being played; all teams are mixed boys and girls – basketball, football, hockey, rugby, netball, athletics (sports hall athletics) and boccia. Bromley Mytime works together with Bromley’s School Sports Partnership Managers to coordinate Bromley’s entries into the mini games.
LYG - Main Games
Bromley Mytime works in partnership with schools and local sports clubs and voluntary Team Managers to enter teams into the LYG. The age range does vary according to the sport, with the upper limit in many cases being U17 (school year 13), some sports however, are based around U14’s. The following Activities are included in the games: angling, archery, athletics, disability athletics, badminton, basketball, boccia, canoeing, cycling, diving, fencing, football, MLD football, gymnastics, hockey, judo, karate, netball, rugby (girls tag), squash, swimming, disability swimming, table tennis, tennis, trampolining, duathlon, volleyball, weightlifting. Unless stated otherwise, all these activities are for both boys and girls, some as one mixed team others are independent boys and girls teams.
How to take part
The standard of competition differs from sport to sport, and to be considered for selection to the Bromley Squads you must meet all the necessary criteria relating to age, standard etc and must either live or go to school in Bromley.
